Telephone companies are taken off the hook. Ruling in three related cases, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed that Congress did not exceed its authority by immunizing telephone companies from lawsuits arising from warrantless eavesdropping (Hepting v. AT&T) after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, dismissed lawsuits brought against the telephone companies (McMurray v. Verizon Communications), and revived a suit against the government (Jewel v. National Security Agency).

Good morning, America. The nation's population will be 312.8 million persons on New Year's Day, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated. It represents a 2.25 million (or 0.7%) increase from a year ago.
